MEŽĀ I (IN THE FOREST I)

Installation “In the Forest I” reflects my interpretation of the "childhood fairy tale forest”. “Latvenergo” felled tree trunks from the factory area, painted in bright colors, refer to the child’s free, easy, and irrational thinking and irrational impulses. Largescale installation makes the viewer to feel the artistic contrast between the abandoned factory premises and the bright coloring of dominant paintings.

I remember childhood walks and plays with my Papa in the nearest forest, where the environment around me seemed magical, mysterious, where the trees were so high, powerful and glamorous. I remember the mushrooming with father and brother in the forest when my elder brother walking before us planted the on the market bought mushrooms for me to find.

In “In the Forest I” I tried to create an illusion of time, focusing on the process of “erosion or degradation”. Childhood memories are both so bright and real, and at the same time fantastic and irrational. The old Cotton Factory has a story to tell, found in the long corridors, wide floors, old drawers and Soviet posters. I wanted to put my memories in a room, which itself was a memory- only for another room.
